Upcoming Expenses for Tournaments and Leagues: Pre-Pay Encouraged

Hey all!
I just wanted to break down the upcoming costs of tournaments we'll be having for the next few months (yes, months. But that's because of a new Innistrad-based League starting 3 weeks after the set releases).

* 2ND ANNUAL SATURDAY MORNING MAGIC OF HIXSON CHARITY TOURNAMENT
DATE: April 21st

LOCATION: 1494 Bahlsprings Lane, Hixson TN 37343 (The Baha'i are needing the church for their business)

ENTRY FEE: I'm looking for a minimum of $5 from everyone who plays. You may bring more. 100% of the entry fee will go to the Chattanooga-area Food Bank.

* AVACYN RESTORED POST-RELEASE
DATE: May 12th

LOCATION: Baha'i Faith Center (address is as the top of the blog)

ENTRY FEE: $9. This gets you 3 packs of Avacyn Restored for drafting plus puts a little into the prize pool for additional packs. Pre-pays get priority on the promos ahead of those who show up and pay day-of.

NOTE: I do allow people to pre-pay for "loose packs" (packs that were not used in the draft). However, first priority to pack buying comes after I'm sure there's enough packs to go around for draft.

* INNISTRAD LEAGUE 2.0 (where players can take their pick among all of Innistrad for their pack choices IF I can get enough money to afford 3 total boxes ahead of time)
DATE: May 26th - August 18th (6 periods of  roughly 2 weeks each)

LOCATION: Baha'i Faith Center

ENTRY FEE: One of 2 ways you can pay...
1) Pay for each period that comes up. Broken down, this is a) $18.50 for the initial entry ($16.50 for your 6 packs + $2 into the 1st period prize pool), then b) $5 roughly every 2 weeks after that ($2.75 toward your 1 new pack + $2.25 toward the 2nd period prize pool).

OR

2) $43.50 up front

NOTE: When paying, please let me know what 6-pack arrangement (eg: 6x Avacyn Restored, 2x of each set, 3x Dark Ascension and 3x Innistrad, etc.) you'd like to start out with so I can see what I need to order.

I do encourage early payment so I can secure the boxes we'll need. Without at least some early payers, it's a financial hardship on me at the moment. So I'm asking to please pre-pay so it'll be easier to help afford all the things we'll need for these tournaments.

Thank you for your time, and enjoy these events when they come up! I know I will. :)

2nd Annual Saturday Morning Magic Charity Tournament!

I am pleased to announce that I have decided on a time, format, and some prizes for the 2nd Annual Saturday Morning Magic of Hixson Charity Tournament!

DATE: April 21st, 2012

TIME: 10:50 for announcements (no more than what's here), 11:00 AM for first round. We'll stop around 1:45 PM to distribute prizes and announce our tally for how much we'll be donating.

FORMAT: 100-card Singleton Pauper
Details: 100-card Singleton Pauper breaks down into 3 separate rules for deck-building.
                  1) You must have 100 cards in your deck. No more, no less.
                  2) Aside from Basic Lands, you may only use one (1) card of any name.
                  3) You may only use cards that have been released as Commons in physical form.

Nitpicks: I know this will come up, so I'll go ahead and answer some of your current questions:
                 1) You may use any rarity version of a card that has been released as a Common. If you do, be sure to look up the card to make sure it was released as a Common at some point in physical form.
                 2) The baseline for "what is a Common" for the older sets will be a search on http://gatherer.wizards.com .
                 3) "Physical form" is needed because some cards got rarity downgrades for their transition to Magic Online. Specifically, they did this in the Master's Edition online-only sets. When you search for what cards are Commons, do not include any Master's Edition results! Other than that, you should be okay to rely on whatever sets are mentioned in the search.
Example 1: Adarkar Sentinel is listed as a Common in Master's Edition II but an Uncommon in Ice Age. Ignore the Master's Edition II piece. Therefore, Adarkar Sentinel is an Uncommon and cannot be used.
Example 2: Atog is listed as a Common in Master's Edition IV but an Uncommon in Fifth Edition and Mirrodin and a Common in Antiquities and Revised. Ignore the Master's Edition IV result. Even though Atog has been printed in physical form at Uncommon twice in more recent times, it was at one point a Common in physical form. Therefore, Atog is legal.

TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE: Multiplayer games. If at least 6 people show up, we will take a vote for 3-way and 4-way games or, with enough people, Two-Headed Giant multiplayer (whatever is the crowd's preference). If fewer than 6 show up, we'll do at least 2 games of X-way Multiplayer (where X is how many people show up).

FINISHING ORDER: Finishing order will be determined on a points basis, with game points determined by the lowest number of people in an X-way game for any given round. For example, if 4 people are in one game and 5 in another, the points structure will go 4, 3, 2, and 1 for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, respectively. This way no winners are at a disadvantage because they were put into a lower-numbered X-way than another winner.

At the end of the day, points will be totaled up and the player with the most points wins and gets first pick of the available prizes.

PRIZES:
We are having prizes donated in, so all of your entry fee is donated to a charity of our choosing. (If someone has a good idea for what charity to go for, please feel free to suggest. otherwise I may go with the Chattanooga Food Bank or the Red Cross. I'd like to keep the money local, though.)

Here's what we have in the prize pool as of April 2nd:
1 Olivia Voldaren
1 playset of promo Stormblood Berserker
1 Morningtide toboggan (well, the person who donated it said it's a "beanie", but I don't know)
1 mono-White 9th Edition deck with Glorious Anthem included.
1 mono-blue 9th Edition deck with Mahamoti Djinn, Mana Leak, and Sleight of Hand.
More may be added as I get more donations to the prize pool.

ENTRY FEE: I'm asking everyone to bring a minimum $5. This will go 100% to the charity of our choosing. The prizes are donated, so none of it goes to repaying for cards in the prize pool or into my pocket as profit.

If you have any questions, let me know. I hope we can get a lot of people in! We donated $100 last year to the Red Cross, which doubled our money to $200 and sent it to Japan. While I can't realistically expect $200 (lol), I would like to get to $100 again, if not more.

Please help in any way you can. Donating prizes, money, and/or playing. Whatever you can give, I ask that you do. We'd love to keep making this a yearly tradition. :)

Possible Charity Tournament Near End of April

Hey guys!
Last year we did a charity event in April to help out the victims of the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. We raised about $100, and thanks to a Red Cross promotion it doubled to $200. :)

This year, I'd like to do another charity tournament. I'm going to see about getting prizes donated. We'll probably do it toward the end of April. I don't know what kind of format it'll be. And I'd like to ask for a minimum of $5 that will all go toward charity. (Of course, the more you pay, the more goes to charity. :) )

The question is: What format would you all like to do? (And no, "it doesn't matter to me because it's for charity" isn't an acceptable answer. lol!). While it is for charity, I also want us to have a lot of fun with it. :)

So what do you all think?

Going Forward with Reverse Modern. Feedback Needed.

After some thinking about running Reverse Modern a week from this upcoming Saturday, I've decided to go ahead and run it.

However, I'll need some feedback. I had a few issues with people saying they didn't like the idea of the format, but I don't know what's wrong with it inherently. I'm not the DCI or WotC. Formats I think up may not be fully thought out. That's why I need input and advice to help make any format we try the most successful it can be.

I do know we'll do the following:

1) Reverse Modern will allow only those cards originally printed before the current card frames existed (so anything before Mirrodin and 8th Edition)

2) You may use any version of card that was originally printed in the older frames (so a M12 Birds of Paradise is just as legal as an Alpha one).

3) Ban list currently is following the Legacy ban list. Any input into additions is greatly appreciated.

4) Despite what I originally posted, I'm stripping any bonuses for using exclusively older cards. This seemed to be a point of contention when the issue came up, so I'll heed the feedback and will give no bonuses. That way an M12 Birds of Paradise, for example, means exactly the same as an Alpha one, for example.

5) Entry Fee is $2. The prizes will come from leftover promos, leftover April Charity Tournament prizes, and a prize pack split of however many packs the entry fee will buy from M12.

6) Minimum entry level is 3 people. The tournament style will be swiss in the sense that everyone will play each other one time before either ending the tournament or cutting to the finals/semi-finals (as time allows).

Is there any feedback anyone could provide to help make this format enjoyable? I appreciate any insights.

Next Tournament: Reverse Modern! September 10th

I think I'm gonna go ahead and pull the trigger.

Saturday, September 10th (roughly 2 weeks from this upcoming Saturday) is the debut of REVERSE MODERN for Saturday Morning Magic!

What exactly will Reverse Modern be, anyway, you may be asking.

Well, take Wizards of the Coast's Modern format...and reverse the legalities.

That's right! If a card was originally printed in the old card frame (used from Alpha through 7th Edition for Core Sets and Arabian Nights through Scourge for Expansions/Blocks), you can use any version of it in Reverse Modern. So a Core Set 2012 Llanowar Elves will work just as well as an Alpha one...well, in most cases.

I'm going to propose (ie: It's not a final decision) that we allow the following bonus: Anyone using all old framed, black bordered versions of cards legal in Reverse Modern will be eligible for some kind of bonus. What this bonus is, or whether it will stick around, is TBD. But essentially, you can't use white-bordered cards or newer-framed black-bordered cards to count in this bonus. If you're going to use a Llaonwar Elves in your deck and want this bonus, it's gotta be either Alpha, Beta, or a 7th Edition foil. ANY old-framed black-bordered version would be okay, so long as it's old-framed, black-bordered, and originally printed as such. (So sorry, but the judge promos Sword of Fire and Ice and Dark Confidant will not be legal).

The tournament will be Swiss, and each person will play each other player once. Once everyone has played everyone else once, the highest 2-4 players (depending on how many people enter) will face off in a Finals/Semi-Finals to determine the Top 2 or Top 4 placings (again, depending on how many people enter.

We will not, repeat not solely rely on the DCI software. The first round or 2 I feel confident that the DCI software can suit our needs. From there on, I'll need to consult with Nathaniel on how to get it to handle the type of Swiss I want us to have.

Any feedback or comments are greatly appreciated.

Entry fee will be $2, and that will go to adding packs of M12 to the prize pool. With enough entrants, we can do at least 1 booster pack to the winner and the rest of us will split a booster or 2. But the actual prizes and distribution will depend on the total number of entrants.

We'll start at 11:00 AM. This should provide us ample time to get some 30-minute rounds in. However, we need to be done by 2:30 so we'll adjust as needed to fit within the time frame.

Thanks! And I hope to see a lot of people for Reverse Modern. :)

Our Modern Format: Help with Older But Legal Cards

Hey everyone!
I got to thinking and realized even in my own deck making I forgot a lot of cards that were reprinted in new borders just because they were judge promos or released in some other fashion.

So I'm going to provide links here to at least most cards that that had new frame reprints made. As usual, it's your responsibility to make sure the cards you decide to run are legal in Vintage and that you don't end up using something banned on our Modern-format list.

JUDGE PROMOS

FRIDAY NIGHT MAGICS, SUPER JUNIOR SERIES, AND VARIOUS OTHER PROMOS

DUEL DECKS, FROM THE VAULT, AND OTHER SPECIAL RELEASES

PRO TOURS AND GRAND PRIXS

I'm not including stuff from set releases (Core Sets and any set from Mirrodin onward) since those cards would be legal under Wizards of the Coast's version of Modern anyway.

As a reminder, here are our rules for our Modern format tournament Saturday:

1) Any card with a release date of 2003 onward in the newer card frame (compared to anything pre-Mirrodin). The intent is that if you look through your cards and find something in the card frame used from Mirrodin onward you can use it (granted it follows rules #2 and #3).

2) Follow the official Vintage Banned/Restricted List. Most of what we'll use that's Restricted should be:
Balance (Judge Promo and a From the Vault set)
Brainstorm (Commander deck)
Burning Wish (Judge promo)
Channel (From the Vault set)
Demonic Tutor (Duel Decks: Divine vs. Demonic)
Fact or Fiction (Duel Decks: Jace vs. Chandra and Commander deck)
Lotus Petal (From the Vault set)
Memory Jar (From the Vault set)
Mind's Desire (Judge promo)
Mystical Tutor (From the Vault set)
Necropotence (From the Vault set)
Regrowth (Judge Promo)
Sol Ring (Commander deck and various other outlets)
Strip Mine (From the Vault set)
Tinker (From the Vault set)
Wheel of Fortune (Judge Promo)
Windfall (Commander deck)

3) Follow the Banned list below:

  • Ancient Den
  • Bloodbraid Elf
  • Chrome Mox
  • Dark Depths
  • Golgari Grave-Troll
  • Great Furnace
  • Hypergenesis
  • Seat of the Synod
  • Sensei's Divining Top
  • Skullclamp
  • Sword of the Meek
  • Tree of Tales
  • Umezawa's Jitte
  • Vault of Whispers
We'll have the tournament this upcoming Saturday, so go and run with any ideas you may have. You've got a pretty wide cardpool, made bigger by the Duel Decks, promos, etc. I hope to see some level of variety Saturday. :)

Modified Modern Format Tournament July 2nd!

Hey everyone!
How about for some good format news, eh?

On July 2nd we're going to try a modified version of the proposed "Modern format".

Modern format basically says anything released in a set from Mirrodin through the present day is legal along with cards from any Core Set from 8th Edition through the present.

But while Wizards of the Coast's version doesn't take into account the various pre-constructed decks and promos that have been released in modern frames (think 8th Edition and Mirrodin, thus how they came at that cut-off), mine will.

So here's how we'll determine card legality:

MODERN FORMAT CARD LEGALITY: GENERAL GUIDELINES
1) Any tournament-legal card with a copyright of 2003 starting with the Mirrodin set and 8th Edition Core Set is legal to play in our version of Modern.

2) Old versions of tournament-legal cards reprinted since 2003 in the newer frames (compared to pre-2003) are allowed as long as you can prove it has a release in the post-2003 card frames.

"BUT," I hear, "what about stuff like Sol Ring, Demonic Tutor, etc. that are Vintage legal but are otherwise illegal in practically all other formats?"

That's where we get to our Banned/Restricted List for our version of Modern format.

MODERN FORMAT CARD LEGALITY: BANNED/RESTRICTED LISTS

1) BANNED
In addition to any "ante" or "subgame" cards, the following will be banned in our Modern:

2) RESTRICTED: Follow the Vintage restricted list here: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Resources.aspx?x=judge/resources/sfrvintage

I've gone through the Restricted list and I think I've pulled out all the cards that were not reprinted in sets from 2003 onward (in other words, they were only in decks or released as Promos). Those cards are:

Balance (Judge Promo and a From the Vault set)
Brainstorm (Commander deck)
Burning Wish (Judge promo)
Channel (From the Vault set)
Demonic Tutor (Duel Decks: Divine vs. Demonic)
Fact or Fiction (Duel Decks: Jace vs. Chandra and Commander deck)
Lotus Petal (From the Vault set)
Memory Jar (From the Vault set)
Mind's Desire (Judge promo)
Mystical Tutor (From the Vault set)
Necropotence (From the Vault set)
Regrowth (Judge Promo)
Sol Ring (Commander deck and various other outlets)
Strip Mine (From the Vault set)
Tinker (From the Vault set)
Wheel of Fortune (Judge Promo)
Windfall (Commander deck)

However, you are responsible for making sure your cards do fit the Vintage restricted list, regardless of what I post here. Our official Restricted list for this tournament is based on the WotC list; my mini-list above is a help guide and is not authoritative (as in, you can't come to me and say "But you didn't post [insert card name here]. I'll just say "Did you check the Vintage Restricted list?")

Entry fee will be $2, with packs of Scars of Mirrodin and/or New Phyrexia to split for prizes.

If you have any questions, feel free to E-mail me or post a comment here. We hope to see you for Modern on July 2nd! :)

End of Year Schedule PLUS Christmas Tournament Announcement

As we approach the end of the year, we need to get the schedule of events that help round out our upcoming festive month.

DECEMBER
4th: Casual Day
11th: Christmas Tournament! See the rules below. Also, last league of 2010!
18th: Off Day
25th: Christmas Day!!!! I hope you enjoy the day with friends, family, and loved ones.

JANUARY 2011
1st: Casual Day. Show off any new cards you got over the Christmas break. :)
Rest of Month: TBD

Okay, so the big thing here...THE CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT!

If you can guess by now, you're gonna build Red- and Green-themed decks. But if I leave it completely open, I'm afraid I'll get some Jund variant that's not really a lot of fun to play. So let's help the fun factor a bit:

2) Singleton, meaning only one copy of any card unless it's a Basic Land.

3)  Un- cards are okay except for Granny's Payback.

4) The only legal colors are Red and/or Green. No Colorless cards, and no multi-colored cards that you cannot use Red and/or Green mana exclusively to pay for any and all costs on the card (including mana cost).

5) You may only make Green and/or Red mana from your mana sources. If you make any other color, you get 1 Colorless mana instead for that color.

6) Your deck cannot be mono-colored: You must have a mix of Red and Green (and/or Red/Green multicolor) cards in the deck. I have no mandated ratio of Red-to-Green cards, but be honest with yourself: If 99% of your deck is Red, chances are it's gonna come across as a mono-Red deck splashing Green for one or two cards.

7) "Christmas Gift" 1: If you run all Snow-Covered Forests and Snow-Covered Mountains as your lands, you may start the game with 1 extra card in hand and increase your maximum hand size by 1.

8) "Christmas Gift" 2: If you include Goblin Snowman in your deck, you may start the game with 1 extra card in hand and increase your maximum hand size by 1.

NOTE: The "gifts" accumulate, so having all Snow-Covered Forests and Snow-Covered Mountains PLUS Goblin Snowman will give you 2 extra cards in hand at the start of each game and increase your maximum hand size by 2.

I will do some kind of hand-out, but I'm not sure what I'll do. I've got promos left over, so I may do that but I'm not sure which ones to use. Regardless, I'll do something.

Oh, did I mention? Cost is free! Who can argue with that in the month of Christmas? ;)

Coming Soon: Full SOM Spoiler, Tournament Schedule, Cube Videos

How's everyone doing today?

I thought I'd better get some business out of the way while it was still fresh on my mind (and I had the energy to post it. :p  ).

A)  SCARS OF MIRRODIN SPOILER

The full spoiler for Scars of Mirrodin comes out tonight at midnight. If you're going to a Pre-Release this weekend (where you can get that nice Wurmcoil Engine. ;)  ;)  ), you might want to scope out the spoiler and see what you think will be good, great, and not so hot. A little preparation may go a long way in the Sealed Deck format.

In the next few days, I'll post a re-cap of the reprints (and one "pre-print" from Future Sight finally seeing the light of legitimate day) before the Pre-Release.

B) SCHEDULE UPDATE
I'm updating the schedule here to include a few off-weekends and to schedule new tournaments. (The full updated schedule is just below the list of changes.)

Changes include:
1) OFF WEEKEND this weekend. Some of us are going up to Dicehead in Cleveland for their Pre-Release (yeah, we're cardboard crack addicts. At least we admit it!).

2) Our next tournament is our Scars of Mirrodin Post-Release on October 9th. $8 entry fee gets you 3 packs of Scars of Mirrodin from which we'll draft. Prizes are as usual, and if Organized Play in Knoxville comes through like they have the last few sets we'll have Steel Hellkites and Wurmcoil Engines to give away! I'll probably buy at least 1 of each though if I can't confirm how many of each we may get, so we'll have at least one of each promo ready to hand out.

3) October 23rd is now a Casual Day. The next tournament will be October 30th.

SMM SCHEDULE

SEPTEMBER
9/25: Scars of Mirrodin Pre-Release Event at Dicehead Games & Comics. $25 Entry Fee, which should include 6 packs of Scars of Mirrodin (for Sealed Play) and the Pre-Release foil Wurmcoil Engine. Tournament starts at 6:00, so be prepared for a long day.

OCTOBER
10/2: Casual Day
10/9: Scars of Mirrodin "Release" Draft, details TBD
10/16: Casual Day
10/23: Casual Day
10/30: Tournament Format TBD, may do some kind of Halloween special but I'm not sure yet.

C) CUBE DRAFT VIDEOS
I recorded gameplay videos from the Cube Draft we did this past weekend. I'll post those sometime before the Pre-Release.

Enjoy the remainder of Scars of Mirrodin Spoiler Season! And be sure to check out the full SOM spoiler starting at midnight. It's sure to be a great rest of the set!

Updated Schedule: Dicehead SOM Pre-Release and Cube Schedule Shuffle

It's a new month, which means we've got a new schedule!

We're still doing our American Pride Day on 9/11. Instead of staying at home and wallowing over the day, do what the terrorists don't want you to do, which is enjoy your freedom and go on with your lives. I know it may sound like an extremist Republican saying, but I feel that's as real as it gets.

So we'll enjoy our freedom with the Magic: The Gathering version of a "Thank You" to those who serve our country.

The basic rules are simple: Bring in a deck that contains only Red, White, and/or Blue cards (determined by mana cost)* and play with that deck to get 1 free pack of Magic 2011!

We're talking about going to the Scars of Mirrodin Pre-Release up at Dicehead in Cleveland. If we do, we're going to re-arrange our schedule to fit with a regular who can only come down once every two weeks. To do this, we're moving the 3rd Cube Draft up to September 18th. I've got the cards I want to add to this Cube, so we're ready from that standpoint. The Cube Draft was scheduled for October 2nd, so this move makes that a free day.

Everything else stays the same, including our normal local post-Release event for Scars of Mirrodin.

So now...The Schedule!

SEPTEMBER
9/11: American Pride Day. Show up and play with a deck consisting of only Red, White, and Blue cards and get a free pack of M11!*
9/18: Cube Draft 3, including a special set of additions for this round.**
9/25: Scars of Mirrodin Pre-Release Event at Dicehead Games & Comics. We'll meet at the church at 10:00 and go straight to Dicehead (those who live closer to Cleveland just go straight on). $25 Entry Fee, which should include 6 packs of Scars of Mirrodin (for Sealed Play) and the Pre-Release foil. Tournament starts at 6:00, though, so be prepared for a long day. (Yes, if we're going for the promo card, it's best we be there extra early to ensure we've got a card.).

OCTOBER
10/2: Casual Day
10/9: Scars of Mirrodin "Release" Draft, details TBD
10/16: Casual Day
10/23: Tournament, Format TBD.
10/30: Casual Day, may do some kind of Halloween special deal but I'm not sure yet.

*Details of this promotion are updated from last week:

1) Colorless artifact cards are okay so long as they A) could produce at least 1 of the 3 colors or B) have activation costs requiring colored costs of at least 1 of the 3 colors.

2) Multi-color cards are okay as long as they are at least 2 of the 3 colors and only those colors. For example, Lightning Helix is okay since it's R/W, but Woolly Thoctar isn't because it has Green in its cost.

3) Lands that provide multiple colors of mana are okay as long as they could produce at least 1 of the 3 colors.

4) *ADDITION* The spirit of this theme day is to allow Red, White, and Blue cards to shine. But by allowing cards that could generate Green and/or Black mana, you could include White cards that have Green abilities and utilize off-color abilites. To close this loophole, any Green or Black mana produced is instead treated as Colorless. For example, Seaside Citadel provides either Green, White, or Blue mana. If you choose "Green", instead it produces 1 Colorless mana.

Tournament Schedule Update

It's been a while since I've updated our schedule, so let me get a few dates down to give you a better idea of what's to come.

JULY
7/24: M11 "Release" Draft. $8 Entry. Sun Titan and Ancient Hellkite promos available; winner gets one of each. Prizes come from the Rares and Foils in the M11 packs opened for the draft and possibly 1-2 additional M11 prize pack splits.
7/31: Casual Day

AUGUST
8/7: Wayne's "Crazy World" Tournament. Rules will be posted the night after the M11 "Release" Draft. $2 Entry, prizes come from M11 prize pack splitting.
8/14: Casual Day
8/21: Tiff's "Un-"Orthodox Tournament. Rules still TBD. $2 Entry, prizes come from M11 prize pack splitting.
8/28: Casual Day

If we have any changes to this, I'll post a revised schedule when I know about the changes. But I'll also try to keep this updated every week with a new post.

Take care!

Remaining May + June Schedule

MAY
22nd: Casual Day
29th: Off Day, Tournament June 12th, Format TBD

JUNE
5th: Casual Day
12th: Tournament, Format TBD
19th: Casual Day
26th: Tournament, Format TBD?

So I need an idea for a tournament June 12th. I have an idea to do another Cube Draft, but if someone else has another idea just leave a comment to this post.

June 26th has a date, but Wayne needs to remind me what we're doing with it as he wanted that date.

I'm working on getting the Rise of the Eldrazi draft videos up. I got up to Round 2, Part 2 before YouTube decided to take it sweet time processing the video. When I get them all up, I'll post here with the video links.

Until then, take care!
