Charity Tournament Update: New Location, More Prizes!

Hey all!
I wanted to make a few updates to our 2nd Annual Saturday Morning Magic of Hixson Charity Tournament (previous details: http://cglhixson.blogspot.com/2012/04/2nd-annual-saturday-morning-magic.html).

1) Because the Baha'i are needing the church for a meeting, we will have to meet elsewhere. One of our regulars has volunteered to let us use his place to play. We will not be limited to time there except by the earlier leave time of anyone who's playing. If you plan on playing in the charity tournament, we'll hold it at:

1494 Dahl Springs Lane
Hixson, TN 37343

If you need directions, you can type the address into Google Maps or call Jennifer Legacy at 423-704-7273.

Jennifer has offered to cook for us if we'll all chip in a little extra money, maybe upwards of $5 to help with dinner but only give what you can afford. She can either cook out or we can chip in on something she can order and bring back to us. It's our call on that, but she's willing to help.

2) We have a few more prizes to add into the prize pool! Up for grabs from Wayne Eanes is a Frost TitanTrepanation Blade, and a Scotty McCreary CD (I kid you not...lol.)

3) We'll be playing for the Chattanooga-area Food Bank. All donations will go straight to them.

If there are any more updates, I'll post them here. Hopefully by Monday I can get another batch of Avacyn Restored previews up for your musings and judgments.

Until then, take care everyone! :)

Going Forward with Reverse Modern. Feedback Needed.

After some thinking about running Reverse Modern a week from this upcoming Saturday, I've decided to go ahead and run it.

However, I'll need some feedback. I had a few issues with people saying they didn't like the idea of the format, but I don't know what's wrong with it inherently. I'm not the DCI or WotC. Formats I think up may not be fully thought out. That's why I need input and advice to help make any format we try the most successful it can be.

I do know we'll do the following:

1) Reverse Modern will allow only those cards originally printed before the current card frames existed (so anything before Mirrodin and 8th Edition)

2) You may use any version of card that was originally printed in the older frames (so a M12 Birds of Paradise is just as legal as an Alpha one).

3) Ban list currently is following the Legacy ban list. Any input into additions is greatly appreciated.

4) Despite what I originally posted, I'm stripping any bonuses for using exclusively older cards. This seemed to be a point of contention when the issue came up, so I'll heed the feedback and will give no bonuses. That way an M12 Birds of Paradise, for example, means exactly the same as an Alpha one, for example.

5) Entry Fee is $2. The prizes will come from leftover promos, leftover April Charity Tournament prizes, and a prize pack split of however many packs the entry fee will buy from M12.

6) Minimum entry level is 3 people. The tournament style will be swiss in the sense that everyone will play each other one time before either ending the tournament or cutting to the finals/semi-finals (as time allows).

Is there any feedback anyone could provide to help make this format enjoyable? I appreciate any insights.

Tournament Idea: Reverse Modern?

Hey guys!
I want everyone's input on an idea I had for our next tournament: Reverse Modern. One of our players suggested something about playing JUST older cards but had it restricted all the way to Alpha/Beta and having to use Alpha/Beta versions of cards. Well, that's not only extremely limiting but it depends on what Alpha/Beta you can get without spending an arm and a leg.

However, I liked the idea: Take cards not "from X year onward" but "from X year backward".

The trouble I'd have is, how far back would we want to go for this "Reverse Modern"?

Here's the idea: Take all the sets from 19XX on back and those are the only cards allowed. To make playing easier, you may use current versions of cards that were allowed back then (so for example, you don't have to have an Antiquities Mishra's Factory in order to play it. You can use the ones from Duel Decks: Elspeth vs. Tezzeret).

We could also give bonuses for using all/almost all older versions: For example, if your deck is entirely black border without using newer-framed cards (Mirrodin and 8th Edition onward, or the current frames) or alterations (coloring in the white border, for example), you get +10 life or +1 to maximum hand size or some bonus.

What does everyone think? What would you suggest be the cutoff for "Reverse Modern" (either by year or by block/Core Set).

ATTENTION: Change to Overtime Rules for M12 Post-Release AND ALL NON-SWISS EVENTS AT SMM

ATTENTION: I have a change to how the overtime rules will work for Saturday AND FOR NON-SWISS TOURNAMENTS at SMM.

As many players at SMM have raised a concern over fairness to certain decks over others with the overtime rules I have posted for the M12 Post-Release, the following will be the procedure for non-swiss events starting Saturday (NOTE: This I feel covers the vast majority of all cases we'll have crop up. All other scenarios brought up will be addressed at a later date as they come up, either in actual tournament scenarios or as "what if" questions):

Assume you're in your 5-turn overtime.

GAME 1 or GAME 3, CLEAR WINNER (a player has lost all their life, a player had tried to draw from an empty library, a player has 10 or more Poison counters, etc.): A Game win, thus a Match win, for the winner.

GAME 2, CLEAR WINNER: If the winner of Game 2 causes the Match to tie (1-1-0 for both players), go to a Sudden Death 3rd Game. Go to the first life change where one player ends up with a higher life total than the other. The player with the higher life points wins the Game and thus the Match.

GAME 1 or GAME 3, NO CLEAR WINNER AFTER 5 TURNS (neither player is at 0 life, a player isn't drawing from an empty library, etc.): Whoever is ahead on Life Points gets a Game win, thus the Match win. While Life Points normally aren't used to determine a game winner like this, since there MUST be a winner it's the only alternative to use.

GAME 2, NO CLEAR WINNER AFTER 5 TURNS: The game ends in a TIE. THEN, if that does not tie the match results, most of the time whoever won Game 1 will win the Match. If the MATCH ends in a tie because of the tie for Game 2, do a Sudden Death 3rd Game and go to the first life point change where one player ends up with higher life points than the other.

I'll also post reminders Friday. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to post here or E-mail me.

Thanks for reading! We hope to see a lot of you for the M12 Post-Release Saturday! :)

Our Modern Format: Help with Older But Legal Cards

Hey everyone!
I got to thinking and realized even in my own deck making I forgot a lot of cards that were reprinted in new borders just because they were judge promos or released in some other fashion.

So I'm going to provide links here to at least most cards that that had new frame reprints made. As usual, it's your responsibility to make sure the cards you decide to run are legal in Vintage and that you don't end up using something banned on our Modern-format list.

JUDGE PROMOS

FRIDAY NIGHT MAGICS, SUPER JUNIOR SERIES, AND VARIOUS OTHER PROMOS

DUEL DECKS, FROM THE VAULT, AND OTHER SPECIAL RELEASES

PRO TOURS AND GRAND PRIXS

I'm not including stuff from set releases (Core Sets and any set from Mirrodin onward) since those cards would be legal under Wizards of the Coast's version of Modern anyway.

As a reminder, here are our rules for our Modern format tournament Saturday:

1) Any card with a release date of 2003 onward in the newer card frame (compared to anything pre-Mirrodin). The intent is that if you look through your cards and find something in the card frame used from Mirrodin onward you can use it (granted it follows rules #2 and #3).

2) Follow the official Vintage Banned/Restricted List. Most of what we'll use that's Restricted should be:
Balance (Judge Promo and a From the Vault set)
Brainstorm (Commander deck)
Burning Wish (Judge promo)
Channel (From the Vault set)
Demonic Tutor (Duel Decks: Divine vs. Demonic)
Fact or Fiction (Duel Decks: Jace vs. Chandra and Commander deck)
Lotus Petal (From the Vault set)
Memory Jar (From the Vault set)
Mind's Desire (Judge promo)
Mystical Tutor (From the Vault set)
Necropotence (From the Vault set)
Regrowth (Judge Promo)
Sol Ring (Commander deck and various other outlets)
Strip Mine (From the Vault set)
Tinker (From the Vault set)
Wheel of Fortune (Judge Promo)
Windfall (Commander deck)

3) Follow the Banned list below:

  • Ancient Den
  • Bloodbraid Elf
  • Chrome Mox
  • Dark Depths
  • Golgari Grave-Troll
  • Great Furnace
  • Hypergenesis
  • Seat of the Synod
  • Sensei's Divining Top
  • Skullclamp
  • Sword of the Meek
  • Tree of Tales
  • Umezawa's Jitte
  • Vault of Whispers
We'll have the tournament this upcoming Saturday, so go and run with any ideas you may have. You've got a pretty wide cardpool, made bigger by the Duel Decks, promos, etc. I hope to see some level of variety Saturday. :)

Clarification to Modern Format Policy: Time Spiral Block "Shifted" Cards

Hello again! As I was looking back over the Commander deck lists, I realized something that I omitted in my "new border" policy for the Modern Format.

What happens to all the "Timeshifted", "Colorshifted", and "Futureshifted" cards, since they don't use the exact modern-framed design (again, think anything from Mirrodin through the present day)?

Here's the clarification: "Timeshifted' (Time Spiral), "Colorshifted" (Planar Chaos), and "Futureshifted" (Future Sight) cards are also legal in Modern along with any older-framed (pre-Mirrodin) versions of them.

(images from MagicCards.info)

Time Spiral's "Timeshifted" Example

Planar Chaos' "Colorshifted" Example

Future Sight's "Futureshifted" Example

For those who may have joined the game after Time Spiral block, a bit of a Magic history lesson:

When WotC put together Time Sprial block, they wanted a mix of nostalgia (Time Spiral), shake-ups (Planar Chaos), and future "sneak peaks" (Future Sight). They came up with 3 ways to help identify their special cards:

Time Spiral: Along with the purple-looking expansion symbol on each card, all these cards are direct reprints of pre-Mirrodin classic cards. The card frames are done in the pre-Mirrodin style, thus making it easier to identify them as reprints when you pulled them from packs of Time Spiral.

Planar Chaos: To mix things up a bit compared to how they normally design cards color-wise, they moved some effects into different colors just for Planar Chaos (for example, even though Wrath of God was the normal white mass removal card, to mix things up they gave black a "Wrath" effect in Damnation). These cards had normal rarity denotations (Gold = Rare, Silver = Uncommon, Black = Common) but moved some pre-Mirrodin cards into different colors and changed nothing else but the name and casting cost (example: Pestilence, a black card, was changed to Pyrohemia, a red card that does the exact same thing but is Red instead of Black). The card frame is a bit different from normal post-Mirrodin borders but it's the same basic frame design.

Future Sight: The final set kept the running theme of "cards from different pieces of Magic's history" by introducing cards and mechanics and card types that could be used in future sets. However, some were gags (see Steamflogger Boss). All cards that were like this used a brand-new card frame that may or may not see future use. The card frame has the mana symbols on the left side of the illustration along with a symbol on the top-left corner denoting what kind of card it is (a claw means "Creature", for example). Some examples of cards and/or mechanics that have seen actual use since Future Sight are Phosphorescent Feast (printed 1 year later), Bloodshot Trainee (printed in Scars of Mirrodin), Planeswalkers (previewed on Tarmogoyf and printed in the very next set, Lorwyn), and Shadowmoor/Eventide's cycle of "filter lands" similar to Graven Cairns.

I hope you found this as a moment of clarity for Modern and as an interesting historical piece if you are fairly new to the game. Let me know what you think below. Thanks for reading, and enjoy building for Modern! :)

Modified Modern Format Tournament July 2nd!

Hey everyone!
How about for some good format news, eh?

On July 2nd we're going to try a modified version of the proposed "Modern format".

Modern format basically says anything released in a set from Mirrodin through the present day is legal along with cards from any Core Set from 8th Edition through the present.

But while Wizards of the Coast's version doesn't take into account the various pre-constructed decks and promos that have been released in modern frames (think 8th Edition and Mirrodin, thus how they came at that cut-off), mine will.

So here's how we'll determine card legality:

MODERN FORMAT CARD LEGALITY: GENERAL GUIDELINES
1) Any tournament-legal card with a copyright of 2003 starting with the Mirrodin set and 8th Edition Core Set is legal to play in our version of Modern.

2) Old versions of tournament-legal cards reprinted since 2003 in the newer frames (compared to pre-2003) are allowed as long as you can prove it has a release in the post-2003 card frames.

"BUT," I hear, "what about stuff like Sol Ring, Demonic Tutor, etc. that are Vintage legal but are otherwise illegal in practically all other formats?"

That's where we get to our Banned/Restricted List for our version of Modern format.

MODERN FORMAT CARD LEGALITY: BANNED/RESTRICTED LISTS

1) BANNED
In addition to any "ante" or "subgame" cards, the following will be banned in our Modern:

2) RESTRICTED: Follow the Vintage restricted list here: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Resources.aspx?x=judge/resources/sfrvintage

I've gone through the Restricted list and I think I've pulled out all the cards that were not reprinted in sets from 2003 onward (in other words, they were only in decks or released as Promos). Those cards are:

Balance (Judge Promo and a From the Vault set)
Brainstorm (Commander deck)
Burning Wish (Judge promo)
Channel (From the Vault set)
Demonic Tutor (Duel Decks: Divine vs. Demonic)
Fact or Fiction (Duel Decks: Jace vs. Chandra and Commander deck)
Lotus Petal (From the Vault set)
Memory Jar (From the Vault set)
Mind's Desire (Judge promo)
Mystical Tutor (From the Vault set)
Necropotence (From the Vault set)
Regrowth (Judge Promo)
Sol Ring (Commander deck and various other outlets)
Strip Mine (From the Vault set)
Tinker (From the Vault set)
Wheel of Fortune (Judge Promo)
Windfall (Commander deck)

However, you are responsible for making sure your cards do fit the Vintage restricted list, regardless of what I post here. Our official Restricted list for this tournament is based on the WotC list; my mini-list above is a help guide and is not authoritative (as in, you can't come to me and say "But you didn't post [insert card name here]. I'll just say "Did you check the Vintage Restricted list?")

Entry fee will be $2, with packs of Scars of Mirrodin and/or New Phyrexia to split for prizes.

If you have any questions, feel free to E-mail me or post a comment here. We hope to see you for Modern on July 2nd! :)

Charity Tournament Overtime Procedure Revision and Charity Choice

Hey all!
I only noticed this as I was getting an ad ready for posting on MTGSalvation.com .

My original statement said that whoever had the highest life totals at the end of the overtime game won the match. Obviously this can only be true for Games 1 and 3 in a match.

But what about if Game 2 goes to overtime?

Again, in order to facilitate finishing the rounds in a (relatively) timely manner, whoever has the higher life total at the end of their overtime game wins the game. THEN, if the match score is tied 1-1, the match is a draw and each player receives 1 point. If life totals are tied after 5 turns, the first change in life totals determines the winner and match records will be checked for ties/wins.

I apologize for the confusion.

Also, I've been suggested to the Red Cross  as the charity of choice. This person has had personal experience with how the Red Cross has helped them, so I'm going to donate all proceeds to the Red Cross. If there's a way to designate the money to go straight to Japan, I will.

Thanks for your attention, and we hope to see you next Saturday for what should be a fun Legacy event!

Final Details for Japan Charity Tournament, 4/2

Hello everyone.
If you've been following the updates on the Japan Charity Tournament, you've seen a lot of "tentative" or "tbd" type of musings here.

Well, today we're going to finalize most of the information.

JAPAN CHARITY TOURNAMENT

WHEN: April 2nd, 2011 @ 11:00 AM. Late comers may buy a bye for Round 1 by paying another $2 (also to charity) but you will have a 0-0 win-loss record to start and must play in Round 2. No "late bye buy-ins" will be allowed after Round 2 starts.

WHERE:
Baha'i Faith Center
2405 Hamill Road
Hixson, TN 37343

If you need directions, tell me if you're coming from Highway 153 on the Chickamauga Dam or from the Wal-Mart on Highway 153 and I can give you directions if you don't trust Google Maps or Mapquest.

ENTRY FEE: $6, all of which will go to charity. If you are late, you may enter in Round 2 for a $2 "late bye buy-in." You will start with a 0-0 record, though, and must play in Round 2.

FORMAT: Legacy with Proxies Allowed
NOTE: You MUST have fast access to current Gatherer wordings for your proxies. You cannot go searching on a computer, laptop, cell phone, etc. for your proxy information.

TOURNAMENT STYLE: Swiss Format, with total round numbers to be determined based on the final number of participants after Round 1 starts. A Top 8 playoff may or may not happen, depending on how long we can stay at the church. Each player will get 3 points for a match win and 1 point for a match draw.

OVERTIME PROCEDURE FOR A MATCH: Players will take a total of 5 turns after time is called to finish a game. Whoever has the higher life total after the 5 total turns are over wins the match. If the life totals are tied, the match is a tie. I'm doing this in order to keep the games flowing.

TIES FOR TOP 8: Should we have a tie on points for the 8th place position, the player who finished their final match first will get the position. If this method does not work out (for example, I can't be 100% certain of who finished a match first because both/all Top 8 contenders report their matches at the same time), whoever beat the higher-ranked player in that final match will get the 8th place position. (For example, I have 3 people tied for 8th place after reporting. If I can't determine who finished their game ahead of the others, I'll look at the rankings of their opponents prior to that round. Player A played the 10th place player, Player B played the 13th place player, and Player C played the 9th place player. Player C gets the spot since he had to beat the highest-ranked player among the 3 matches).

PRIZES: This section is still under construction, but so far (as of 3/21/11) we have...
1x Lorwyn Cryptic Command (courtesy Jason Pongonis, aka Microstar22 on MTGSalvation.com)
1x Metalworker (courtesy me. Don't say I never do anything nice. :p  )
4x FNM promo Everflowing Chalice (courtesy Morgan Hardy from Organized Play)
2x Gateway promo Plague Stinger (courtesy Morgan Hardy from Organized Play)
1x Time Spiral (added 3/22) (courtesy Patrick, aka itfeltsowierd on MTGSalvation.com)
1x Spell Snare (added 3/22) (courtesy Patrick, aka itfeltsowierd on MTGSalvation.com)
1x Tutore Mistico (Italian Mystical Tutor) (added 3/22) (courtesy Patrick, aka itfeltsowierd on MTGSalvation.com)
1x set of 5 foils for each color (added 3/22) (courtesy Frank)
1x set of sleeves (added 3./22)  (courtesy Frank)

I have 2 people looking for more potential prizes. I'll add more as I get more. I'll also add the names of the people responsible for donations.
Prize distribution will be finalized probably on March 31st.

Let's remember that the most important part of this tournament is that we're helping Japan a little with their recovery efforts. While I haven't decided on a charity yet, I will take ideas. I'd like to find a trusted charity that's working on the damage the radiation from the nuclear plants has caused as well as finding preventative measures for those who haven't been affected yet.

Thanks for your time, and please RSVP when you can by commenting here. Let's do some good with this tournament. :)

Charity Tournament Update and Knights vs. Dragons Duel Deck Lists

Hey guys! Hopefully I can be back to some regular posting, even if it's fairly brief. No promises, though.

Just to kind of update what we have for the charity event, so far I've got 1 Cryptic Command on the way and Morgan Hardy of OrganizedPlay in Knoxville will see what he can do. Also, I've got promo Everflowing Chalices that I'll use up to hand out here.

So far, then, the prize pool stands at:
1x Cryptic Command
2x-4x Everflowing Chalice promos (don't know how many are in the wrapper. Should be 4, but I'm saying 2 to be conservative)
Some random card(s)/stuff Morgan comes up with.

If you know anyone who would love to give to Japan and have some fun doing it playing Magic, let them know about this event. We'll run it April 2nd. If you know someone who wants to give prizes for this, however they can help, I'll be happy to have it.

I'll also discuss tomorrow what format we'll use, final entry fee, etc. If you want to be part of that discussion, come and take part. Otherwise, leave feedback here or in the post below this one.

NOW...how about some Magic release news, huh?

April 1st is the release date for the next Duel Decks release, Knights vs. Dragons. One store got their allotment early and spoiled the lists. You can find the lists here: http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=276474

For those who don't click on the link, the deck comes with Knight of the Reliquary and Bogardan Hellkite as the Mythic Rare foils in the deck. Other noteable Rares include Knight of the White OrchidLoxodon Warhammer (with new art), and Thunder Dragon (not sure if they'll use the From the Vaults or Starter 1999 artwork).

If you're wondering if this is worth the $20...ehh, it depends on what you think of the decks as a whole. I like the Knights deck, but the Dragons are a complete and utter random pile. I was wondering how far they could go with a Dragon theme for a deck. The answer was, not too far.

If you're looking at card values, I'd say stay away from this deck. If you do anything with it, buy it now and hold onto it sealed for a while. If it follows the trends of most other Duel Decks, just having a sealed copy will get you profit in the long run. I just don't know about opening this up and piecing out the cards.

That's all I've got for today. This weekend I'll finalize the charity event information and give you a Two-Headed Giant rules update involving Poison.

Until then, take care!

An Idea: Charity Tournament for Japan in Two Weeks?

I was perusing Twitter one day this week and saw that, in place of Grand Prix - Kobe (I think it's Kobe, but it doesn't matter. It's a Grand Prix that should have been in Japan) this weekend some tournament organizers in Japan are holding charity tournament to help raise money for the Japanese relief efforts.

So I was wondering...Why don't we do something?

I'm going to see what I can get for prize support, but I want to do a constructed event with proxies allowed (especially if we do Legacy or Vintage). Specific proxy rules and formats would follow, but the basic idea is here.

Entry fee would be $6: $3 would go toward any prizes I may have to pay for, and $3 would go toward the charity part.

My idea is if we could get people to RSVP, I could get a base prize based on the number of entrants and the format we do.

For example...

4-6 people (the minimum I'd do): $12 for prizes, so maybe a Metalworker for Legacy, Cryptic Command for Extended, or an Elspeth Tirel for Standard (depending on which format we choose). The rest would go toward charity.

7-9 people: $21 for prizes, so maybe an Intuition for Legacy or Sword of Feast or Famine for Standard (again, format-dependent). The rest toward charity.

10+ people: $30 minimum available for prizes, so possibly a Rishadan Port for Legacy or, with enough people, a Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas for Standard (again, format-dependent). The rest to charity.

NOTE: I'm definitely not tied to anything right now, but you get the general idea. If I can get prize donations, I'll add those to the prize pool and they won't count toward the "prize payback" I'm doing with the RSVP example (so I won't take money away from the charity to "pay" for your contributions).

Just keep in mind: This isn't done for the prizes (they're an incentive to participate, NOT the focus) and there's no ranking of any kind on the line.

If you've got ideas or prize donations you want to add in, feel free to chip in. Again, nothing's set in stone. I just want to get feedback and additional ideas and/or fixes to my proposal.

EDIT: I just wanted to clarify...the $3 per person that I'd use for prizes is to get a prize that's desireable and worth peoples' time to attend. Also note that if I'm doing an RSVP type idea I'd only use the lower number's $3 piece to pay for the card. For example, at the 4-6 bracket, I'd only use upwards of $12 to get a card. If I get 4 people, that's $12 for prize and $12 for charity. If I get 5 people, that's still $12 for a prize and that 5th person's whole $6 would go toward charity for $18 going to charity. 6 people would then be $12 for prize and $24 for charity. At 7 people, the next level, $21 goes toward prizes and $21 goes to charity. At 8 people, that's $21 to prize and $27 to charity, and so on. As I said, though, this is only an idea and is NOT set in stone. Feedback and prize donations are welcome.

EDIT 2: We have a bite on prize donations! We're getting a free Cryptic Command to throw into the prize pool! :) Let's hope to keep the donations rolling. :)

Cube Draft Saturday!

Sorry for the late post. I got lazy during the weekend and since just flat forgot to post it.

We will be Cube Drafting this Saturday! It'll include some Scars of Mirrodin cards, as well as some nice, powerful additions and blingy replacements.

If you want to see some of the Power 9 in action, or some nice foil Fetchlands, or even a Beta Black Knight or Demonic Tutor, be sure to come by Saturday.

I will warn, a few cards will make guaranteed appearances in the packs this time around. I'll leave it to you to figure which cards. ;)

We hope to see you Saturday!

Commander Format for 1/15

We've got our first format for the new year!

On January 15th, if enough players want to, we'll do a Commander free-for-all. If we get agreement, we'll run it almost like a tournament. Entry fee would be $2, and I'd provide as many packs as $2 can provide. As usual, we'd then open all the packs and, starting with the winner, each person can pick one card out of the packs, rotating around the finishing order until all the cards are gone. (A system for doing this will be posted later in the week).

We'll follow the majority of the rules found on MTGCommander.net.

We are making a few changes, though:

1) Auto-Win and Auto-Loss cards not already on the banned list are banned. This includes, but is not limited to, cards like Door to Nothingness, Felidar Sovereign, and Mortal Combat. The key to this ban is if it lets a player win or makes a player lose by its own effect, it's banned.
CLARIFICATION: Cards that give players Poison Counters and milling effects are still legal. Losing for having 10 Poison Counters is specifically written into the Comprehensive Rules as a win condition, as is losing because you can't draw a card.

2) Platinum Angel is banned.

3) We will follow normal Multiplayer mulligain and first-turn draw rules instead of the method described on MTGCommander.net. That is, everyone gets one free mulligain, and the player going first in the game gets to draw a card instead of skipping their first draw.

Why did we decide to go this route?

1) Auto-Win and Auto-Lose cards are no fun. EDH/Commander games are meant to go long. When someone can pull off an auto-win against everyone all at once, especially after just a few turns, it detracts from the fun of the format.

2) We've had problems with Platinum Angel in the past. You can't lose, and your opponents can't win, and usually when you pull her out you'll have some kind of backup. It's a local nuisance.

3) Normal multiplayer mulligain rules are just easier than what's in the EDH/Commander rules. That and it keeps things consistent no matter which multiplayer format we play.

NOTE: This is experimental. If more cards give us cause for concern, or if we want to try auto-win/auto-loss cards for example, we can amend our "house rules" to follow suit.

If you have any thoughts, suggestions, questions, etc., feel free to comment or E-mail me.

We hope you have enjoyed your New Year so far!

Rest of Month: TBD

Okay, so the big thing here...THE CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT!

If you can guess by now, you're gonna build Red- and Green-themed decks. But if I leave it completely open, I'm afraid I'll get some Jund variant that's not really a lot of fun to play. So let's help the fun factor a bit:

2) Singleton, meaning only one copy of any card unless it's a Basic Land.

3)  Un- cards are okay except for Granny's Payback.

4) The only legal colors are Red and/or Green. No Colorless cards, and no multi-colored cards that you cannot use Red and/or Green mana exclusively to pay for any and all costs on the card (including mana cost).

5) You may only make Green and/or Red mana from your mana sources. If you make any other color, you get 1 Colorless mana instead for that color.

6) Your deck cannot be mono-colored: You must have a mix of Red and Green (and/or Red/Green multicolor) cards in the deck. I have no mandated ratio of Red-to-Green cards, but be honest with yourself: If 99% of your deck is Red, chances are it's gonna come across as a mono-Red deck splashing Green for one or two cards.

7) "Christmas Gift" 1: If you run all Snow-Covered Forests and Snow-Covered Mountains as your lands, you may start the game with 1 extra card in hand and increase your maximum hand size by 1.

8) "Christmas Gift" 2: If you include Goblin Snowman in your deck, you may start the game with 1 extra card in hand and increase your maximum hand size by 1.

NOTE: The "gifts" accumulate, so having all Snow-Covered Forests and Snow-Covered Mountains PLUS Goblin Snowman will give you 2 extra cards in hand at the start of each game and increase your maximum hand size by 2.

I will do some kind of hand-out, but I'm not sure what I'll do. I've got promos left over, so I may do that but I'm not sure which ones to use. Regardless, I'll do something.

Oh, did I mention? Cost is free! Who can argue with that in the month of Christmas? ;)

Vintage Proxy Tournament Rules REPOST: Tournament 5/15

Hello again!

This is a repost of the Vintage Proxy Tournament Rules from last month. We had a weekend where no one was able to make the tournament date, so we rescheduled for May 15th.

Our next tournament, coming up a week from tomorrow, is Vintage format with Proxies!!!

We've never done a Vintage tournament where the Power 9 have been available, so here are the rules we're using:

1) Follow the Vintage Restricted List found here: Wizards of the Coast Official Vintage Restricted List

2) You are allowed up to 9 (Nine) proxy cards. For those unfamiliar with the term, it's one card used to stand in for another. For example, if you're using a Plains and you write "Black Lotus" on it, you're signifying you're using that card as a Black Lotus.
    * Proxies can take most any form. They can be as simple as Basic Lands with the intended card's name written on it (along with most all information, abbreviated of course for room), or they can go as high as full-color printouts used in a sleeve over another card.
*What you cannot use as Proxies: non-Magic cards (you can't say a Hitmonchan from the Pokemon card game is really a Goblin Lackey), singleton cards whose only purpose is a proxy for another card but with no identifiable information for the card really being used (for example, a lone Mountain being used as a Mox Ruby with no writing signifying it's a Mox Ruby).

3) As a courtesy, we ask that you not build any FTK (First-Turn Kill)/FAST Kill decks. FTK decks will just get you hated and make you feel unwelcome in our crowd. We do like to play the game, but not a whole match inside of 10 minutes due to your wicked 1- or 2-turn combo. However, since there's no way to enforce a "no FTK decks" rule, I can't make this a hard-and-fast rule.

4) Contrary to the original rules post, Rise of the Eldrazi will be legal for this tournament. My issue then was the availability of Rise of the Eldrazi cards for our decks, but since it'll be out for a few weeks at the time of the tournament I think we're good to go with using them.

5) Entry Fee and Prize: $2 entry fee, prize split of as many Rise of the Eldrazi packs as we can get for the total entry fee.

This upcoming weekend is a Casual Weekend, so if there's something fun you've been wanting to try feel free to bring it!

Until then, everyone take care, and we hope to see you soon!  :)
