Mirrodin Beseiged Post Release 2/12!

Hey all!

It's that time of the set release schedule again! Mirrodin Beseiged officially launches tomorrow, meaning we have one of our favorite local traditions coming up.

Mirrodin Beseiged Post-Release Tournament!

DATE: February 12th (one week from the Saturday after release)

TIME: Drafting starts at 11:00 AM.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT: 3x Mirrodin Beseiged Booster Draft

TOURNAMENT STYLE: Swiss. Players with similar records will be matched up as best as possible, with the first round being a random matchup. 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie.

NUMBER OF ROUNDS: Depends on the turnout. With 8 people, we'll do a 4-round tournament.

FINISHING ORDER: Most points to least points. Tiebreakers TBD.

TIME PER ROUND: 30 minute matches, best 2 out of 3 games.

FINALS PLAYOFF: After so many rounds, the top 2 players will play in a best-of-5 match.

ENTRY FEE: $8.50. That breaks down to $8.25 for the 3 packs and $.25 toward an extra Mirrodin Beseiged pack toward the overall prize pool.

PRIZE SUPPORT: Prizes come from the Rares and any foils we open except one Rare or foil that you decide to keep from the packs you opened in the draft. As well, 1 pack of Mirrodin Beseiged will be opened and placed in the Rares/foils pool to give more options from which players can pick cards.

The way the prize pool will work is that all Rares/foils and the full contents of a pack of Mirrodin Beseiged will be placed onto a table. Everyone can choose to reserve 1 (one) Rare or foil card they opened in the draft. After everyone has decided to take a "reserve pick", those who did not then get first pick of what cards are left. After everyone has one card, then all players in finishing order pick from all the remaining cards 1 card per person and keep picking in that order until all cards are taken.

OTHER PRIZE SUPPORT: In addition, we may have stuff coming in from Organized Play in Knoxville. Any use of these extras is still to be determined until I know what all I'm getting.

EDIT (2/6/2011): I got a preliminary count of stuff I'll get from Organized Play. So far, we've got:

4x Hero of Bladehold
4x Glissa, the Traitor
4x Thopter Assembly
1x Mirran Faction Pack
1x Phyrexian Faction Pack

So here's what we'll do for prizes in addition to our Rares/foil pool:

1st: 1 (one) Faction Pack from the faction of their choice and the promo card that goes with it. (So if it's Mirran, you'll get Hero of Bladehold. If it's Phyrexian, you'll get Glissa, the Traitor).
2nd: The remaining Faction Pack and its promo.
3rd - 12th (if we get that many): In finishing order, pick from the remaining promos 1 (one) of your choice. Extra promos will be held over into another event if we have extras after this.

Now...if we get more than anticipated...I'll determine then how to readjust the prizes.

Be rest assured, though...the first 12 people who sign up will get a promo.

EDIT (2/8/2011): Looks like we'll have even more supplies than we thought...with some bad news sprinkled in.

GOOD NEWS: We got one extra of each Pre-release promo and two extra Thopter Assembly promos. So now we'll award promos to the first 16 people who sign up!

BAD NEWS: The Faction Pack delivery will be late. Morgan will ship those Thursday with no guarantee we'll get them by Saturday. IF YOU WIN ONE, PAY ATTENTION: Give me your E-mail address and I'll notify you the day I have them in. Come by the next Saturday (which should be simply the Saturday after this, 2/19) and get yours.

We hope to see you at our draft! We always have a lot of fun with these new sets, and I hope you'll join us and experience it for yourself.

Possibility of Mirrodin Beseiged Pre-Release HERE!

I've got some exciting news for SMM!

Morgan Hardy, the guy who runs Organized Play in Knoxville, has made an offer we can't refuse...if we can get the crowd for it.

Morgan's suggested that he can come down here to run a Mirrodin Beseiged Pre-Release the morning of January 29th!

Yes, you heard that sound in the back of your head right. We're nearing legitimacy as a Hixson gathering ground for Magic players.

Here are the details as best I know them (so all details are subject to change):

SMM Mirrodin Beseiged Pre-Release (Tentative)
Site: Baha'i Faith Center, 2405 Hamill Road, Hixson, TN 37343
Date: January 29, 2010
Time: We'll open the doors at 8:30 AM, Pre-Release at 9 AM. Morgan has to make the run from Knoxville and be back in time to run his Pre-Releases at Organized Play, so we're going to try and accommodate his schedule as best as we can.
Format: Sealed Deck; make a 40-card decks from the contents of 3 Scars of Mirrodin packs, 3 special Mirrodin Beseiged faction-alligned** packs, and basic lands.
Entry Fee: $25-$30, like a normal Pre-Release
What do you get for the Entry Fee: 6 packs (noted above) and a Pre-Release Foil Promo card (card TBA).

**So what are these "faction-alligned" boosters anyway?

The story of Scars of Mirrodin starts with the Phyrexian hordes invading the plane of Mirrodin (the home of planeswalker Karn, Memnarch, Glissa, Slobad, and others from 2003-2004). As the Phyrexians start to take over, the locals of Mirrodin, calling themselves the Mirrans, fight to fend off the poisonous advances of the mechanical lifeforms attempting to convert Mirrodin into a "New Phyrexia".

Specifically for the Pre-Release, Mirrodin Beseiged will have its packs split into two factions: One set of packs for the Mirran side of the conflict, one for Phyrexia. A Mirran pack of Mirrodin Beseiged will have only Mirran-watermarked Mirrodin Beseiged cards in it (basic land and foils notwithstanding), while the Phyrexian pack will have only Phyrexian-watermarked Mirrodin Beseiged cards.

From this Magic Arcana

When you sign up, you'll choose one of these factions: either Mirran (so far, all colors) or Phyrexian (so far, only Black, Green, and artifacts, with some Blue involved). You'll get 3 packs of Scars of Mirrodin, which are normal packs you're used to getting, and 3 packs of either Mirran-aligned or Phyrexian-alligned Mirrodin Beseiged boosters.

Again, all these details are tentative, meaning "subject to change."

HOWEVER, I need to see what kind of interest level we can get for this. If you're interested in having a Pre-Release directly in the Hixson/Chattanooga area, feel free to leave a comment or E-mail me directly at CardGameNut@gmail.com . If I can get enough interest, it just may be worth Morgan's time and effort to join us. And we can finally thank the man face-to-face for all he's able to do for us down here. :)

Our Normal Draft Rules: SMM's M11 Draft Primer

Hey everyone!

Next week we have our M11 "Release" Draft! But I'm hoping for new people to show up, and those people aren't up to speed on our Draft rules.

Don't worry! It's mostly the same as normal drafts, just a few exceptions to how we draft Rares and foils.

So without further ado...Saturday Morning Magic's Draft Rules!

1. We start as normal, with 3 sealed booster packs ready to be drafted.
2. Open the first pack, but note the Rare (and any foils) you open on a separate sheet of paper.
3. Draft as your normally would draft, passing cards to the left after each pick.
4. Repeat for Pack 2, writing down the Rare (and any foils) you open. This time, though, pass to the right.
5. Repeat for Pack 3, writing down the Rare (and any foils) you open. This time, though, pass to the left.

Now you ask, "Why did I write down those Rares and foils?"

Easy. They're mostly our prizes.

When we started drafting here, we didn't have the luxury of $2.50 packs. We had to spend ~$4.40 per pack, making our drafts over $13! I couldn't add any more to that fee, so we wouldn't have prizes if we did a normal draft.

So I got this idea: "Let's use the Rares and foils as our prizes! That way we'll have something to give out and people won't draft money cards just to get money cards."

But there was a problem with that: What if the person who came in last opened a $15-$20 card in their booster? If they finish last, chances are they won't get a comparably-valued card to pick in the prize pool.

Thus, our draft prize tradition started.

Draft Prize Pool Rules
1. When you are out of the tournament, put all Rares and Foils you drafted into the Prize Pool.
2. After the tournament ends, starting with the winner and going in finishing order, each player may reserve 1 (one) Rare or Foil card they had opened from their 3 booster packs and take that as their first pick. (For example, if you opened a Baneslayer Angel, Dark Tutelage, foil Llanowar Elves, and Birds of Paradise in the 3 packs you opened, you may take one of those 4 and only among those 4 as your first pick.)
3. Anyone who did not reserve a Rare or Foil will then pick from the remaining cards in tournament finish order for their first pick.
4. After everyone has picked up one Rare or Foil card, starting with the winner and moving down the finishing order, each player gets to select one remaining Rare or Foil card in the pile.

The hope in these rules was to protect the players' investment: If the person who ends up dead last opened a $10 Rare, I want them to be able to keep that Rare and make back their money (and keep playing, but shh! You didn't hear that from me. ;)  ). If they didn't open something that nice but someone else opened a $5 Mythic Rare they didn't want (maybe they reserved the $10 Rare they opened instead), that gives the last place player a chance to recoup a vast majority of their $8 entry fee.

But overall, it's about the fun and excitement of playing with new cards no more than a week after their release...and on the cheap, too! Just sit down and enjoy some new cards with a great group of players.

And remember, we'll have Sun Titan and Ancient Hellkite promos to give out (you can see the promo images in the post below this) courtesy of Organized Play in Knoxville. If you win, you're guaranteed one copy of each, whereas everyone else will be at the mercy of the "While Supplies Last" fine print: If I don't have enough to go around, I'll randomly award promos so that everyone has a chance at getting at least one of the promos.

I hope to see some first-timers next weekend! If you have any questions, feel free to post a comment here or E-mail me at CardGameNut@gmail.com .

We Can Haz Sponsors!!!11!!1!

 It's our lucky day!

When I started the blog, I was mainly expecting it to just be a place to update just the local players about what's going on in the upcoming weeks. It works better than E-mail because I can include pictures and video to better show what I'm trying to get across.

The secondary goal was to get people from the internet to take notice of a small group in Hixson looking to expand its numbers.

That secondary goal is now a reality.

I'd like to welcome Organized Play in Knoxville, TN as an unofficial sponsor (I guess?) of Saturday Morning Magic!

The owner of Organized Play, Morgan Hardy, found this blog via a post I made on the MTGSalvation message boards. He read about our Rise of the Eldrazi "Release" Draft and wanted to pitch in and help...at no charge!

So what has his generosity helped us afford? How about...

10x copies of the Launch Party promo Lord of Shatterskull Pass! (which should mean one for everyone, but it's a first-come, first-served basis if we get more than my expected number of players)

3x additional copies of the Prerelease promo Emrakul, the Aeons Torn!

1x new promotional Planechase plane! (for use in any future Planechase format play only) (I'm not sure which one this is, so we'll be surprised!)

And finally... a box of promotional half-decks on the off chance we get any new-to-MTG players in.

Guys, I'm really looking forward to potentially having an ally in Knoxville who can help us up our numbers over the next few months...and hopefully longer. But this is only the first step toward getting our image more out and available. Let's hope we can keep this up and get some serious gaming going once again and return Saturday Morning Magic to its former glory!  :)
